[No place, ca. 1790]. (Ca. 10.2 x 6.1 cm). In gilt frame. Pen drawing in brownish ink with washes, signed by the artist 'Greeting of a naval officer by local women and children at the coast of Coromandel'.

Very nice and delicately executed original pen drawing, signed by by the well-known artist Johann Heinrich Lips (1758-1817), probably designed for an illustration in a book on India. Underneath is written "Die Küste Choromandel". We see a naval officer on a tropical beach being welcomed by four half-naked local women with their five childres. In the background three native men in a small rowing-boat touch at the beach.
Lips was a versatile painter, draughtsman as well as engraver. Born in Kloten near Zürich, he started his career making drawings for Lavater's Physiognom. Fragmente. In 1782 Lips went to Rome where he met Goethe, who asked him to come to Weimar. There is a very nice portrait of Goethe by Lips in pencil and chalk in the Frankfurter Goethe-Museum (Hatje, Goethe und die Kunst, p. 165).  On recommendation of Goethe he was appointed proffesor at the Art Academie by Duke Carl August in 1789. He stayed professor until 1794 when he returned to Zürich. Many drawings and engravings are in the Kupferstichkabinet in Berlin and in the ÖNB in Vienna.

Fine drawing.
