Attempt to supress the pirates in the East Indies

DOWNING, Clement.
A compendious history of the Indian wars; with an account of the rise, progress, strength, and forces of Angria the Pyrate... [Drop-title on page 1]: A succinct history of the Indian wars:...

London, for T. Cooper, 1737. 12mo. Contemporary calf, re-backed. IV, 238, [2 blank] pp.

Original edition of this scarce narrative of the sailor Clement Downing. The author gives a vivid description of the adventures of the squadron sent out to the East Indies under the command of Commodore Matthews to suppress piracy. There is also a quantity of first-hand information about the famous Indian pirate Angria and his wars with the Great Mogul.
The book ends with an account of the life and actions of John Plantain, a notorious pirate from Madagascar, and his wars with the natives on that island. After eight years of war Plantain joined Angria, who made him his chief Admiral.

Very good copy.
