Critical work on the Dutch Indies colonial government

DOORNIK, Jacob Elisa.
Vrijmoedige gedachten over Neerlands Indiƫ en over de regering van den Goeverneur-Generaal van der Capellen.

Amsterdam, C.G. Sulpke, 1826. 8vo. Contemp. limp speckled boards. (4), XVI, 314 pp.

Critical work on the Dutch Indies colonial government under the command of Van der Capellen by Jacob Elisa Doornik (Leiden, 1777 - USA, 1837). In it he pleads for a free culture, free trade, cancellation of serfage, self-regulation by the colonists and as little civil servants as possible.
Doornik studied Medicine in Leiden and became a family doctor in Amsterdam, a.o. of the poet Jan Helmers. He went to the Dutch Indies in 1817 where he became a surgeon in 1820. Afterwards he had his own doctor's practice in Batavia. His first wife died in 1821; he re-married in 1822 with Henriette Maria d'Ozy. Four years later he wrote this current work. Almost immediately after it's publication he headed for the USA, where he died in 1837.

Good uncut copy.
