First and only edition of a rare work by the famous Italian writer Doni, with detailed interpretations of a series of personifications of abstract concepts. After the dedication and a list of cited and mentioned authors in this work, Doni lists the personifications as used by Petrarca. After that he writes in 2 treatises about fortune, time, magnanimity, chastity, religion, the republic, reformation, wrath, love, sleep & dream, the human being and he ends with a long elaboration on death. Each personification is dedicated to a notable Italian person, and most of the chapters end with a letter. Not only the contents of this work are worthwile, also the typography and the beautiful woodcut initials, all showing detailed pictures of persons, are a treat for the eye. This work is also known in a shorter version of only 40 leaves, containing only the first treatise. Francesco Doni (ca. 1513-1574) was a well known writer of his time who wrote many works in different genres as prose, poetry, comedy, letters and dialogues on varying subjects.
