(6), 496, (8), 200 ; (6), 822, (10); (8), 816, (16) pp.

Rare complete set of the extensive contemporary history of the most critical period in the history of the Dutch Republic, when at war on all fronts, with the French, the English and some German princes, and at the same time facing a struggle for power at home between the States and the House of Orange. In Dutch schoolbooks the year 1672 is called the Calamitous Year.
The work is beautifully illustrated with portraits and plates by the famous Dutch artist Romeyn de Hooghe, but especially the complete series of the 13 prints by Sorjou is very rare. The plates vividly show the great damage done by the French army of Louis XIV to the beautiful castles and villages of Utrecht.  A complete set, together with the third volume, continuing and completing the history of the calamitous years 1672-1673 over the next years 1674-1675 when things brightened up again, is very rare indeed.

Fine, uniform set.
