Rare first edition of this work containing two studies on the Dutch expansion overseas by L.C.D. van Dijk (1824-1860). Part one is on the life and travels of Wemmer van Berchem (1580/81-1653), a Dutch VOC admiral and naval hero, based on archive records. This is the only study written about van Berchem, describing a.o. his stay on the Japanese coast. The second part is on the early Dutch-Japanese relations.
