Contemporary half calf, gilt spine blind tooled in compartments with black title label lettered in gold. Frontispiece, extra lithographed title and 38 full-page lithographed plates all by H.K. Browne. XVI, 624 pp. First edition of one of the famous novels by Charles Dickens (1812-1870), originally published in monthly parts from March 1852 till September 1853, profusely illustrated by the regular illustrator of Dickens's works, H.K. Browne. Bleak House contains sketches of Landor as Lawrence Boythorn and of Leigh Hunt as Harold Skimpole. After his father had died in March and after the sudden death of his infant daughter Dora Annie in April 1852, Dickens left devonshire Terrace and moved into Tavistock House, Tavistock Square. Here, in November 1851 he began his new novel Black House, the first part of which was published in March 1852. Good copy.- (Some spotting and soiling throughout).
