Two French comedies
![]() ![]() London, Samuel Harding, 1739. 8vo. Contemporary wrappers. Engraved frontispiece depicting Mr. Duliz offering all kinds of luxurious gifts to Mme Pelisser, engraved vignette on title, title in red & black. 188 pp. Rare first edition of a French comical work by the comedian Desforges of whom not much is known. It tells the story of a rich jew, originally from England, M. Duliz, who lives now in Holland. His father married him off to a rich girl with whom he is not satisfied. And that is why he courts an actress from the opera. This situation is the source for many hilarious scenes. The story is followed by a comedy by Louis de Boissy (1694-1758), which was first published in The Hague in 1734. NUC lists 3 different editions of 1739 all printed in London by Samual Harding. Two of those editions have, according to NUC, a false imprint and were really printed in France and Holland. Our work if of the supposedly Dutch edition of 1739 and of that edition NUC lists only 2 copies. Good copy, uncut.
