Rare edition of an interesting work on historical shipwrecks and other disasters at sea, originally published in 1781 by Deperthes. The present edition was edited and brought up to date by Jean Baptiste Benoet Eyriès and contains the narratives of 38 disastrous voyages, including Gerrit de Veer's hibernation on Nova Zembla (1596-97), the burning of Bontekoe's ship in 1619, the fate of the Batavia, wrecked on the Australian coast in 1629, the adventures of the English frigate Alceste, wrecked in the Straits of Gasper in 1817, and the hardships of the castaway Alexander Selkirk, who was marooned on Juan Fernández in 1704 and would inspire Daniel Defoe to write his Robinson Crusoe.
