On the praise of money

DECKER, Jeremias de.
Lof der geldsucht, ofte vervolg der rijm-oeffeningen. Verdeelt in twee boecken. Behelsende gedichten van verscheydene stoffe.

Amsterdam, Widow of Marten Jansz. Brandt, Abraham vanden Burgh, 1667. 2 parts in one vol. 8vo. Contemporary vellum. (16), 128, (4), 108 pp.

First edition of a posthumously published satyrical poem on the praise of money in the manner of Erasmus' Lof der zotheid (Praise of Folly), by Jeremias de Decker (1609-1666). Jeremias de Decker was one of the most important poets of the second generation of the Dutch Golden Age and follower of P.C. Hooft and Vondel. Lof der Geldzucht, one of the most important works by De Decker, is preceded by memorial contributions of his brother D. De Decker, Joan Blasius etc. De Decker knew the work by Erasmus of 1509 and also its Dutch translation from 1659, by his friend Jacob Westerbaen. The work was reprinted several times and was translated in German. The second part of the book, Vervolg der rijm-oeffeningen, contains a selection of posthumous laudatory and occasional poems. At the last page is stated that it was printed by Pieter Dircksz. Boeteman in 1667.  As a friend of Rembrandt, De Decker planned to sing praises of Rembrandt's paintings in a number of poems. In this work on page 85 De Decker praises Rembrandt's painting Christ and Maria Magdalen. Also, Rembrandt painted a portrait of De Decker, now in The Hermitage in St. Petersburg.
