The first and original edition of Jeremias de Decker's collected poetry. De Decker (1609-1666) was one of the most important poets of the second generation of the Dutch Golden Age and follower of P.C. Hooft and Vondel. Collected and edited by the publisher Jacob Colom ('J.K.') the book contains De Decker's juvenile poems, mostly adaptations (f.e. Psalms and the play Baptistes of Dooper by G. Buchanan) and translations (of Prudentius, Horatius, Ovidius, Juvenalis and Lucretius), followed by his extensive and well-known poem Goede Vrijdagh ofte het lyden onses Heeren, beautifully illustrated by 14 excellent engravings by the famous engraver and artist Jacques de Gheyn after the designs of Karel van Mander, the biographer of Dutch painters. Jacob Colom included in these 'Collected works' the three original editions of De Decker's works (1-3), which he had already published separately in 1654 and of which apparently he had still a fair number of copies in stock in 1656. All he had to do was altering the year '1654' on the titles into '1656'. This is also the case in the copy in the Amsterdam University library. Very good copy.- (With pasted bookplates of V. de la Montagne and Henri Dirkx, and three ms. entries of W.F. Schook dated 1849).
NNBW I, cols. 691-3; for the engravings, see Hollstein VII, p. 183, nrs. 381-394 (2nd state).
