Amsterdam, Schalekamp en Van de Grampel, 1828. 12mo. Orig. boards. With engraved frontispiece, and 4 full-page engraved plates, all nicely coloured by hand. (8), 108 pp.

Dutch edition of the popular English "History of Little Jack" by Thomas Day, originally published in Stockdale's "Children's Miscellany" in 1787, and separately published since 1788. The first Dutch translation was made by Johannes Samuel Swaan, and already published in 1794. Here it is published after the revised edition published at Hoorn in 1818, still with its 1818-preface. According to Van Rijn the Hoorn-edition had been dedicated to the Dutch educational Society "Tot Nut van 't Algemeen", as still indicated by its sub-title, but this dedication was not taken over by the present publishers. The book is nicely illustrated with engraved plates, here attractively coloured by hand. The story of little Jack also became popular in the Netherlands, but all early editions are very rare.

Good copy.- (Rebacked; sl. stained at the beginning).
Cat. Van Rijn 906 (Hoorn-edition of 1818).
