(Paris, L'imprimerie du Comité de Salut Public, after 1794). 8vo. Contemporary boards with black gilt title-label on spine. 12 pp.

Extract of a report on describing the important discovery of how to fabricate soda from seasalt.
At the end of the 18th century the French chemical scientists Jean Darcet (1724-1801), Claude-Hugo Lelièvre (1752-1835) and Bertrand Pelletier (1761-1797) were asked by the department of public health in France to check and describe all the known processes for fabricating soda and to experiment with new processes. In the report, of which the present extract is a part, the 3 prominent scientists examinate and describe the methods discovered by Alban, Athenas, Chaptal & Bérard, Guyton & De Carny and Ribaucourt. However the first process they describe is the one dicovered by Nicolas Leblanc and that turns out to be the most important one and it will play a crucial role in the later industry.
Leblanc discovered a rather easy way to make soda out of seasalt. Many industrial companies were greatly benefitted by this invention, because it was not only a cheap way of getting soda but also the raw material to make it, the seasalt, was available in large, never ceasing quantities. As of that moment Leblanc was known as the "real founder of modern chemistry".
The findings and conclusions of Darcet, Pelletier and Lelièvre resulted in a report of 80 pages. The committee decided to publish this report and at the same time to publish an extract of it, which is the present work. It may very well be that the extract was even published a few days earlier than the whole report. Both the xtract and the report were the first publications making notice of and describing extensively the revolutionary discovery of Leblanc.

Good copy.
