With engraved allegorical frontispiece: Amsterdam as the centre of the world, full-page engraved plate with the coat of arms of Kornelis Witsen, engraving in text, one folding (View on Amsterdam from the Y) and 71 double-page engraved views of the city of Amsterdam. (12), 1-48, (8), 49-152, 145-152, 145-456, 449-456, 449-456, 449-552 (=600), (84) pp. Original edition of the famous finely illustrated topographical and historical description of the city of Amsterdam by the celebrated Dutch historian Olfert Dapper (1635/6-1689). The beautiful views of the surrounding villages, civil and religious buildings and churches, city gates, etc. are made after designs by J. Veenhuyzen, which had also been used for the German work on Amsterdam by Von Zesen. The work is dedicated by Dapper to Kornelis Witsen, former burgomaster of Amsterdam, dated Amsterdam, 30 September 1663. The pagination of the text is irregular; in our copy the pagination slightly differs frm Nijhoff's. On pp. 545-52 is a description of the islands Urk and Emmeloort. The work is concluded by lists of the Amsterdam magistrates from the fourteenth century onwards (pp. (1-76)), index (pp. 77-82)), and list of plates (pp. 83-84)). Olfert Dapper was born in 1635 or possibly early 1636 in Amsterdam. In January 1636, he was baptized in the Lutheran church in Amsterdam. In 1658, he registered at the University of Utrecht. After two years he was signing himself as doctor medicinæ, but probably he never practised medicine. After his studies he returned to Amsterdam where he devoted himself to literary studies. Apart from this famous description and history of Amsterdam, he also published books on Africa (until today, Dapper's Description of Africa (1668) is a key text for Africanists), China, India, Persia, Georgia , and Arabia, although he had not visited any of these exotic destinations himself. In fact he never travelled outside Holland. His books became well-known in his own time. Translations appeared in English, French, and German. In Amsterdam, a well-known street, the Dapperstraat, was named after him. Exceptional fine copy with the book plate of F. G. Waller (1933) pasted on inside front cover.- (Some insign. marginal water staining in a few leaves, the coat-of-arms of Witsen pasted on a newly inserted leaf).
