With 44 (of 50) full-page coloured aquatints. Lacking title-page, introduction, explanatory text leaves and 6 plates.

First edition of a beautiful set of coloured aquatints, depicting landscapes and people encountered during a voyage from Gravesend, to China and India by Thomas Daniell (1749-1840), English landscape painter, and his nephew William Daniell (1769-1837).
In April 1785 Thomas and William (14 years old) embarked on the ship Atlas bound for China, and they reached India in 1786. Daniell stayed at Calcutta for ca. 10 years and when he returned to London he published the work Oriental Scenery. The present work contains 4 plates concerning South Africa a.o. The Cape of Good Hope, and several plates with Chinese and Indonesian vessels, 4 plates with Chinese costumes, and 2 plates with Indonesian costumes, and one plate with a sharkfishing scene (plate 10). It was originally published in 10 parts, 5 plates in each part.
