The art of fencing
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Paris, Herissant, fils, 1766-1767. 2 vols. Large 8vo. Contemporary half calf, spines ribbed and richly gilt, with red and green title labels. With richly designed emblematic frontispiece, engraved portrait of the author, engraved armorial headpiece for the dedication, engraved armorial tailpiece with the French Royal coat of arms, and 45 double-page engraved plates by L.G. Taraval after Taxcilliere, showing the various positions and movements of two gentlemen fencing in the fields. (4), XXXVIII, 241, (9); (14), 215, (1 blank) pp. First edition of a revolutionary course of fencing by Guillaune Danet, Royal fencing master at Paris and teacher of the pages of the Prince de Conty, to whom the work was dedicated. The new principles taught by Danet went against everything taught up till then at the 'Académie d'Armes' at Paris. The Academy also tried with all its might to suppresss the teaching of these new principles at the fencing school that Danet had founded at Paris, however the Academy's attempts remained unsuccessful. Danet's new principles are partly still followed today. At the beginning of the second volume all arguments of Danet's critics are answered at length. Although on the title only 35 plates are promised, the work offers no less than 45 beautifully designed and engraved fencing plates, all bound at the end of the second volume, and all with wide margins. According to Vigeant, Danet was on the one hand an audacious creator, and on the other hand a clever and necessary reformer, and his work belongs to the great masterpieces on the art of fencing. Fine set.- (Top of spine of the second vol. worn).
Vigeant p. 48-9 (mentions 43 plates only); Thimm p. 74-5 (idem).
