Original edition of three biographies as read in thje Académie des sciences morales et politiques by Jean Philibert Damiron (1794-1862) of the three French philosophers and 'encyclopédistes': Jean André Naigeon (1738-1810) on p. 5-75, Sylvain Maréchal on p, 75-99, and the famous astronomer Joseph-Jérome Lalande (1732-1807) on pp. 99-111.
These and more biographies were re-published in 1858-64 in 2 vols. as Memoires à servir pour l'histoire de la philosophie en France au XVIII siècle (reprint: Genève 1968).
The author writes on these three men: "Quant au principal de mes personnages, je ne dis pas mon héros, il ne m'a pas non plus beaucoup charmé. Sans éclat, sans grandeur, avec une célébrité, qui n'est pas précisément de la gloire, et un caractère d'opinions, qui n'est ni l'élévation, ni la modération, il n'est pas un de ces noms que l'on recherche et dont on se flatte, et je me persuade aisément que M. le Secrétaire perpétuel, dans le domaine duquel cependant à la rigueur il ne rentrerait, comme Cabanis auquel il a consacré une de ses belles notices, ne me le disputera pas."
