English translation of a historical and geographical work on the Balearic Islands just after these Islands had been included in the British Empire
DAMETO, Juan Bautista & Vicente MUTThe ancient and modern history of the Balearick islands; or of the Kingdom of Majorca: which comprehends the Islands of Majorca, Minorca, Yviça (= Ibiza), Formentera and others. With their natural and geographical description. Translated from the original Spanish. ![]() ![]() ![]() London, William Innys, 1716. 8vo. Contemporary full sprinkled calf with blind tooled ornamental border on a band of lighter calf around a centre panel of sprinkled calf, blind tooled corner pieces, spine in six compartments with red morocco title label lettered in gold, gilt binding edges. With one double-page engraved map of the Balearic islands and one folded map of the Island of Majorica by Lord Forbes, engraved by I. Senex and printed for William Innys. (16), 304, (16) pp. First edition of the English translation and adaptation by Colin Campbell of La historia general del reyno Balearico (2 vols., 1633-50) by Juan Bautista Dameto (1554-1633; first vol.) and Vicente Mut (1616-87; second vol.). Colin Campbell dedicated this work on the Balearic Islands to the Duke of Argyle, dated Mahon, 1715 (pp. (3-6)), followed by a preface on pp. (7-13). It is not completely clear whether this Colin Campbell is the architect from Scotland (1676-1729) or a surgeon working on the island of Minorca. The latter is more plausible as the Balearic Islands had been included in the British Empire not long before. Campbell could have been the surgeon of the English troops on the island. The year 1716 seems to be a good time to publish a translation of this Spanish historical and geographical work for the English public. Minorca was already reduced by Count Villars in 1707, but it was not till June 1715 that Majorca was subjugated. Port Mahon was captured by he English under General Stanhope in 1708. A second edition was published in 1719. Good copy.- (Spine skilfully repaired).
