The Christianised Buddha Legend, illustrated by Romeyn de Hooghe
Small 8vo. Contemporary vellum. With etched frontispiece and 8 full-page etched plates by Romeyn de Hooghe. [16], 431, [1] pp. Finely illustrated Dutch edition of the famous story of Barlaam and Josaphat, a Christian retelling of the Buddha Legend. The legend relates the conversion of Prince Josaphat to Christianity, inspired by the ascetic life of Barlaam. The authorship is disputed, but the Greek legend 'Barlaam and Joasaph' has been ascribed to St John of Damascus (ca. 675-749) a Christian Syrian monk and priest. Scholars today, however, attribute the legend to St Euthymius the Georgian. The story was translated into Latin in the eleventh century and in this form it became widely known in the Western world. The present Dutch edition was translated from the Latin by François van Hoogstraten, and illustrated by Romeyn de Hooghe, the most prolific artist of the Dutch Golden Age. The plates include an illustration of a unicorn. Another edition (issue?) was published at Antwerp in the same year. Good copy. (Plates loosening, 2 plates with traces of adhesive tape).
