Early issue of the original edition of a magnificent work of great rarity and of the greatest importance for Swedish architecture and topography. Already in 1661 the King of Sweden had formerly ordered Dahlberg, an architect and military engineer who reached the highest positions in the Swedish State, to compose a work which should depict all buildings and places of importance within his kingdom.
Dahlberg prepared most of the designs for the work himself, among which even a few planned buildings of his own design, which however were never executed. For the actual engraving and publication of the huge undertaking, which started in 1693, Dahlberg engaged several famous engravers, also from abroad, like Jean Marot, A. Perelle, Joh. Jacob von Sandrart, Le Pôtre, J. Padtbrugge, E. Reitz, W. Swidde, J. van Aveelen, etc.
The work was continued after the author's death in 1703, and especially in the last part most engravings were made by the Dutch artist Jan van Aveelen, who for more than 20 years lived and worked at Stockholm. Another Dutch engraver who contributed much to the work was Willem Swidde.
The work, paid for by the Swedish King, was not intended for sale, but to be used for presentation and promotion only, so it was rare from the start. However, in 1772 it was made more general available when the remaining copies were brought upon the market with a new 1772-title. The text to the work, originally also ordered by the King from Peter Lagerlöf, was only partly prepared, and never really published.
Fine copy with ample margins, and very fresh impressions of all plates, of a monumental work, with the bookplate of Mr. F.C. Koch, Rotterdam.- (Front hinge and top and bottom of spine expertly restored; few plates browned due to the different quality)
Berlin Kat. 2256; Ebert 21882; Brunet V, 578; Thieme-Becker VIII, 276: "eine kunstgeschichtliche Quelle von unschätzbarem Wert und ausserdem eine ganz hervorragende künstlerische Leisting".
