Militant Catholic catechism in questions and answers defining the Catholic articles of faith, and defending them against the "religious dissidents", written by the Jesuit priest Paulus van den Berghe (Nijmegen, 1609 - Malines, 1683). The Southern provinces of the Dutch Republic, Limburg and Brabant, had been the last to be added to the Protestant Northern Netherlands and received only full status as a province after the French Revolution, partly because they were not considered "safe" in the Protestant religion.
Bordering upon the Southern Catholic provinces left to Spain and later Austria, it obviously was the territory par excellence for the Jesuits to try to keep their flock together. It is  interesting to note that the present catechism devotes a special  part to refute the beliefs of the Mennonites. The catechism was long popular in the Southern parts of the Dutch Republic, but nowadays it is very hard to find a copy.
