Interesting sportsman's manual
Contemporary half calf, spine gilt. With folding lithographed frontispiece and 9 full-page lithographed plates showing guns, nets for bird catching, fishing rods, etc., and all kinds of hunting and fishing devices. (4), 402 pp. First edition of a complete 'hunter's school', teaching and depicting the hunting and catching of various animals with numerous methods and devices. The work was intended to instruct sports and recreation in the countryside, not only for use of rich landowners and young noblemen, but for use of all young people who wanted to enjoy the country sports of hunting, bird catching, and fishing. One plate depicts an artificial cow, and text explains this as an ancient method for the hunter to approach the game. How to build such a cow is described in detail and the reader is warned to follow instructions precisely because most animals are not easily fooled. A rare and interesting sportsman's manual. Fine copy, with bookplate "Constanter", and with the name F.C. Raben gilt-stamped at the bottom of spine.- (Library stamp on first free endpaper; few small restorations without loss of text).
Schwerdt I, p. 129; Souhart 266; Thiébaud 237.
