Van nieuws oversien ende verbetert. Antwerp, Joannes Petrus Willemsens, (ca. 1766). 4to. Contemp. blank overlapping wrappers. With woodcut on title and large woodcut vignette at the end. 79, (1) pp.

Popular children's courtesy book, put entirely in rethorician verse by H. Aerts van Bocxstel. The book consists of a preface to youth of 31 and to 'Prince' of 11 lines in verse, followed by no less than 277 stanza's of 11 lines each with prescriptions of the right way of behaviour in all things. The whole book is printed in a fine Civilité type, and all stanza's start with a fine Civilité initial. About the author not a single biographical fact is known.
In the book he teaches youth the importance to keep a good name and appearance for themselves, how to behave towards their parents at home and towards their teachers in the school, explaining the necessity to learn Latin, French, arithmetic, etc. Further to avoid bad company, abstain from drinking or gambling, and especially from dancing! Rules for how to behave towards the clergy and in the church are laid down, and reflections upon the shortness of life are given. Most important are the lessons about how to behave at the table, consisting of 74 stanza's, that is 814 lines of verse, discussing etiquette on eating and drinking, the serving and carving of food, etc., even including table-conversations.
Van Heurck observed variations in text and other differences, some editions having general chapter-titles like ours, and other editions having an index but no chapter-titles. All Antwerp-editions have a woodcut with the Porquin family in prayer on title. Our publisher's address is the same as that of Joannes Norbertus Vinck, of whom Van Heurck lists an edition of the present title for about 1800. All editions of this chapbook are extremely rare.

Good copy.
