Oblong 8vo. Contemporary calf, spine ribbed and gilt, with red morocco title label, blind-tooled fillets on sides, gilt binding edges, red sprinkled edges. With engraved title and 11 engraved plates (62 x 89 mm) in part 1, engraved title and 11 engraved plates (89 x 106 mm) in part 2, engraved title and 11 engraved plates (89 x 106 mm) in part 3 and engraved title and 11 engraved plates (66 x 89 mm) in part 4), depicting different costumes, professions, and scenes from daily life. Together 4 engraved titles and 44 plates on 48 lvs. Extremely rare (unrecorded?) drawing models for children, consisting of 44 finely engraved plates of professions and local Turkish costumes with captions in French, partly written in ink (parts 1-3). 34 of the plates consist of two identical figures placed next to each other, the left one rendered only in broad outlines, the right one filled in with hatchings in order to create the illusion of volume and shades. The captions of the first suite, which shows professions, are as follows: La marquise, Le marquis, Le mendiant, La marchande, Le paysan, Le berger, La fileuse, La querelle, Le travailleur, Le rouet, Les 2 mendiants. The second and third suites depict Turkish costumes, their iconography being of interest to the study of the Ottoman Empire. The captions are: Le Sultan ou Grand Seigneur, Dame du Serail, Visir Azem ou Grand Visir, Dame Turque, Gentilhomme Turc, La Sultanne Reine, Tulbantar Aga porte turban du G. S., Kiler Kiabajasi qui sert le sorbet au G. S., Selictar Aga porte épée du G. S., Janissaire ou soldat des gardes du G. S., Tambour Turc, Crieur de potage Turc, Atagi cuisinier du Grand Serail, Gentil homme Turc, Un solak ou pajok valet de pied du Grand S., Dogangi ou fauconnier du G. S., Cuirassier Turc, Vendeur de balets, Damoiselle Turc, Crieur de bouteilles Turc, Predicateur Arabe, Kuslir Aga chef des eunuques. The last suite, which doesn't contain any titles, shows professions, such as a fruit seller, a water bearer and other salesmen. Very good copy.- (Binding prof. restored).
Not in Conlon, Colas, Berlin Kat.; no copies in NUC or OCLC; cf. Cohen, pp. 103-4 for a suite comparable with the first part: same collation but with a different title: L'art de dessiner à la plume sans maître, ou les exercises de la jeunesse, dediée au duc de Berry (Paris, ca. 1725).
