Second edition of this curious work, in which the author, Jean Coppin (c. 1615-c. 1690), tries to enthuse the French people for a crusade against the Otoman empire. The original work appeared in 1686, under the title Bouclier de l' Europe....
In this reprint, the title has been changed: the title of the first edition has become the title of the first chapter, and the title of the second part of the first edition has become the title of this second edition. This change can be explained by the fact that his idea to form a crusade wasn't really relevant anymore 30 years later, so Copin put the emphasis on his voyages.
Copin travelled in 1638 to Egypt, where he stayed for eighteen months. He returned to France with a cargo of antiquities for sale but he was raided by Mallorcan pirates. From 1642 till 1647 he was again in the Levant, and visited Tunis and Syria, and became consul at Damiette in 1644. After three years, he returned to Europe, with firm plans for a crusade, but the authorities were not interested at all. Subsequently he decided to publish his work, hoping to find the public more willing to listen to his plans.

Good copy.
