Rare and interestingly illustrated treatise on preventing dike subsidence and sags as well as serious seepage behind the dikes of the main rivers of the Netherlands by Frederik Willem Conrad, a.o. discussing which means and methods can be used best to prevent these dangers. This treatise is the result of a contest which was organized by the Dutch Society of Science (the still existing 'Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen'), based in Haarlem. The question raised in that contest was how to prevend sags in the dikes best. Conrad won the 150 guilders with his solutions presented in this work.
Frederik Willem Conrad (Spaarnwoude, 1800 - München, 1870) was a hydraulic engineer of the water management (Waterstaat) in the Dutch province Noord-Brabant.
