Rare 'tirage à part' from the work Relation abregée d'un voyage fait dans l'interieur de l'Amérique méridionale, published in Maastricht in 1778. The pamphlet contains (1, p. 1-5) the letter of Charles Marie de la Condamine to an unnamed person, dated: Etouilly, près Ham, en Picardie, 20 Oct. 1773. He gives an account of his journeys, starting in 1735 from La Rochelle, with the purpose to measure so exactly as possible, the circumference of the earth. He has made these journeys together with M. Godin des Odonais and M. Bouguer, accompanied by Joseph de Jussieu and the physician M. Séniergues and some other astronomers, engineers and instrument makers.
De la Condamine adds (2, p. 7-30) a copy of the letter written to him by Godin des Odonais in Saint Amand, Berry, 28 July 1773, on the unhappy adventures of his wife during a terrible journey through the backwoods of the Amazone area in the province of Quito to Cayenne.
