Extensive French work on the cultivating of various vegetables bound with a treatise especially dedicated to the cultivating and growing of peaches. The added treatise is mentioned on the title of the first work, but has a seperate title-page and pagination. The work is written by an anonymous member of the De Combles family from Lyons. It is suggested that the author may have been Jean de Combles or one of his brothers, who had a garden not far from Paris. The work on vegetables has appeared in 6 editions from 1749 to 1822.
The work starts with a listing of all plants that are considered to be vegetables. After that many things are said about the seeds, the seeding, the watering and other care taking that are required to gain an optimal harvest. Combles gives also a calendar with an overview of all the different actions which have to be undertaken for the different vegetables in each month. After that separate chapters are dedicated to the cultivating of different vegetables. To some of the 6 editions another work of De Combles is added: his treatise on the cultivating of peach trees, as is also the case in our edition. This work was the earliest one in France devoted exclusively to this fruit and gives an elaborate account on choosing, planting, pruning and cultivating peach trees as well as there is a chapter on moving them.

Good copy.- (Spine sl. damaged and only remnants of black morocco title-labels, hinges weak).
