Second Dutch edition with updated text of this important oblong atlas of the XVII Provinces of the Netherlands. The atlas is composed and published by the ambitious Amsterdam map- and globe maker, printer and publisher Jacob Aertsz Colom (1600-1673), the only publisher who dared to compete with Willem Jansz. Blaeu. The publication of his pilot guide in 1632 put him on unfriendly terms with Blaeu, but Colom did not limit himself to maritime works. In 1635 the first edition of this atlas of the Low Countries appeared, followed by an edition with a French text the next year. Our copy belongs to the second and last edition with the Dutch text, which is considerably updated. The maps, however, are, apart from their new numbering, the same. The date of this edition (ca. 1660) f.e. is derived from a passage on p. 111 mentioning the construction of some wooden buildings for predication in Amsterdam in 1659. After 1660 there are several editions of the maps only, without the text.
The descriptions were derived from the text Reinier Telle wrote for Abraham Goos's Nieuw Nederlandtsch Caertboeck of 1616, which was actually borrowed  from Guicciardini's classic Beschryvinghe van alle de Nederlanden (Amsterdam, Willem Jansz. Blaeu, 1612).
Apart from the general maps of the Netherlands (in Roman times as well as in the 17th century) and  the 17 provinces, there are many detailed maps of regions and cities with the surrounding areas, including the Meyery van 's-Hertogenbosch, Bergen op Zoom, Breda, Valckenburgh en Dalem, Malines, diocese of Liège, Namur, Veluwe, Zutphen, island of Dordrecht, Delfland, 6 maps of the new polders (Bylmermeer, Purmer, Wormer, Heer Huygen-waert, Diemermeer, Zype), Walcheren, Ooster- and Westergoe, and Seven wolde. The plates with portraits include 2 plates with 40, resp. 38 portraits of the Dukes of Brabant and Forestiers of Flandres and one with 39 portraits of the Counts of Holland.

Good and complete copy.- (Title-page damaged: crumpled in the middle with tear and some lost of text; some staining in last lvs, upper margin of last plate repaired).
Koeman II,  Col 5; Koeman/Vander Krogt IIIB, 365:02 (p. 635-7); Introduction by Wil M. Groothuis in the facsimilé edition (Groningen 1987) of this 1660 edition.
