Amsterdam, Dirck Cornelis Houthaeck, 1634. Small 4to. Later blue paper wrappers. Engraved illustration on title, woodcut initials and endpiece. (80) pp.

First and only edition of a subject that was dramatised before in Theodoor Rodenburg's Hertoginne van Savoyen en Don Juan de Mendossa (1619). In his dedication of the play to Jan Janszoon Verwey ('Liefhebber der Poësye'), the author states that he has written it about twelve years before, indicating its date of origin at around 1622. The author based his play on a version of the story in the published in the Histoires Tragiques by Mattheo Bandello (1485-1566) and François de Belleforest (ca. 1530-1583), most probaby the French edition in 7 volumes published in 1603-1604.
The story is about the duchess of Savoy being falsely accused of adultery and sentenced to death. She is rescued by a very pious Spanish knight. On the title-illustration, the duchess is seen in her bed, at the moment of discovery of a man lying under it, by a group of shocked men.
