Amsterdam, Johannes Oosterwijk, 1716. 8vo. 19th-century boards covered with red speckled paper. Full-page engraved frontispiece of a marketplace with a vendor of tobacco by J. Schijnvoet dated 1716, title in red & black with woodcut vignette, woodcut endpiece and initials. (20, incl. frontispiece), 177, (11) pp.

Original edition of this satirical treatise in which the author Johann Heinrich Cohausen (1665-1750) sought to demolish forever the custom of snuffing, through the most vitriolic attack published to that date. The work is divided into two parts, the first of which deals with the misuse and the second with the evil effects of snuff. The author emphasizes the opinion, widely held by contemporary physicians and by moralists, that tobacco-snuffing was essentially a kind of morbid appetite. It was their common contention that only the medicinal use of snuff was permissible; any social use of this remedial sturnutatory was therefore vicious and depraved.
