Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt with red morocco title label, gilt binding edges, marbled endpapers, red painted edges. With a large folding map of the thirteen United States of America after Bonne, 3 tables, of which 2 folding, and several elegant head- and tailpieces. VIII, 264 pp. Second edition of the French translation by Joseph Mandrillon (1743-1794), of this excellent work on Anglo-American commercial relations by Alexander Cluny, to which is added a newly written work by the translator on the geography, history and commerce of the thirteen United States of America (pp. 142-242). The English edition of the former work originally appeared in 1769, and was first translated into French in 1782. The latter work appeared already in 1782 as a separate book. Cluny was one of the first to give accurate information on Hudson's Bay, and to inquire about a more successful commerce with the Americans. His book is said to have been published under the auspices of Lord Chatham, to whom Cluny also addresses the letters in this work. Mandrillon opened a bank in Amsterdam after having made a voyage to America. When the French Revolution broke out, however, he returned to his native country, where he was soon accused by the Parti Constitutionel of having relations with the Duke of Brunswick. In 1794 he was guillotined in Paris. Good copy.
