The work appeared earlier in French in 1723-1728, and was first published in Dutch at Amsterdam in 1730. A second Dutch edition in 4to. was published in 1738. Contents in this copy: - part 1 spans the period 1560- 1618 and is here in the second, revised and corrected edition of 1737. - part 2 spans the period 1618 -1660 and is present in our copy as it was first published in 1728. - part 3 deals with the period 1660 -1716 and is present in our copy as it was first published in 1728. - part 4 has the title: Explication historique des principales medailles frapées pour servir à l'histoire des provinces-unies des Pays-Bas' and is here in the second, revised and corrected edition of 1736. Jean Le Clerc (1657-1736), the son of a Huguenot family that had fled to Geneva, became a studied man in many disciplines: theology, history, philosophy and philology. After having been trained in the Calvinist faith and dogma's, he turned to the less dogmatic faith as practised by the Remonstrants in England and Holland. He went to England and later Holland, where he settled in Amsterdam in 1684. During the journey from London to Amsterdam he met the famous historian Gregorio Leti, whose daughter he married 8 years later. Clericus was a very productive author, writing and producing books on a variety of topics. He is best known for his standard edition of the 'Opera Omnia' of Erasmus (in 10 vol. Leiden 1703-1706) and the edition of a very famous and influential journal, the Bibliothèque universelle et historique (later: Bibliothèque choisie). In this later quality he is considered an important predecessor of the so-called Encyclopaedists. It is in the same spirit that Clericus wrote also this history of the Netherlands. As a humanist and exponent of the Enlightenment he took the side of the Remonstrants and clearly the work was written from their perspective. Good set.- (Front hinges broken; bindings rubbed; some foxing; a few minor tears).
