Classical text edition for the Latin Schools, printed by the Plantin office at Leyden. After the founding of the University of Leyden Christopher Plantin was appointed the official printer for the University, in 1584. But after only a few years Plantin returned to Antwerp, leaving his son-in-law Frans van Raphelingen in charge at Leyden. After his death in 1597 his son Christopher van Raphelingen continued the business. And although he lost his position as official printer to the University, which in 1602 went to Paedts, and in 1620 to the Elsevirs, the Plantin office at Leyden for some time went on to publish a.o. their famous small text editions, which no doubt stood model for the later famous duodecimo's of the Elsevirs, Blaeu, Janssonius, a.o.
