A plea for the excellence of Florentine modern painting and manierism
CIOCCHI, Giovanni Maria.La Pittura in Parnaso. ![]() ![]() Florence, Michele nestenus, 1725. 4to. Contemporary mottled calf, spine ribbed and richly gilt with red title-label, with blind-stamped triple fillet borders on sides, richly gilt inner borders, red mottled edges. XXIV, 310 pp. First edition of an interesting manual on the art of painting, and a plea for the excellence of Florentine modern painting and manierism in a light polemic with Raffael Borghini. Giovanni Maria Ciocchi (1658-1725), a member of a Florentine family of artists active from the 17th to the 19th century, was a kind of Italian counterpart to Gerard Lairesse. Like the latter, Ciocchi was active as a painter all his life, contributing murals and altar pieces to the churches of Florence, and only at the end of his life when his eyesight had become too poor for painting he wrote the present text book on painting. In the form of a friendly dialogue the art of painting pays a visit to Mount Parnassus and pleads before the court of Apollo the superiority of the art of painting as practised at the time at Florence. The author also includes a description of all aspects of making a painting, the plan, the inspiration, the position, the symmetry and perspective, the colour, etc., and in the debate a large number of arguments on both the arts of painting and sculpting are brought into account, full of acute observations on a wide scala of themes, making the book into one of the most interesting documents of artistic Florence of the period. With an extensive index. Fine copy.- (Top of spine sl. worn).
