In an interesting original Antwerp panel binding
CHRYSOSTOMUS, Johannes.Van die beweechnisse des herten, tot berouwe der sonden. Met meer ander gulden tractaetkens des alder heylichsten joannis Chrysostomi: overgheset wt den Latine in duytsche, doer eenen religiosen der Regulier orden sancti Augustini. ![]() Antwerp, Symon Cock, 1546. 8vo. Very interesting contemporary Flemish (Antwerp) binding: full calf, panel with two portraits in roundels on both sides, interesting fastening of two bone buttons on small leather bands to be fastened on two loops. With title printed in red and black, some woodcut initials (8 lines). Collation: A-Q8, R4-1. (131) lvs. (including the mostly lacking quire (R) with the privilege, without last blank) Very rare original and only edition of the Dutch translation of these devotional tracts and sermons of Johannes Chrysostomus by the Antwerp Regular Canon Anthonis van Hemert who translated these texts from the Latin. There are only a few copies known, mostly without the quire (R) with the privilege given by Charles V. Contents: f. 1r: title. f. 1v: contents. f. 2r-4r: Prologue by Antonius van Hemert. f. 4v-27v: Van beweechnis des herten tot berou der sonden, dat eerste boeck tot Demetrius ghescreven. This is a translation of Chrysostomus's De conpunctione cordis, including an explanation of the Sermon on the Mount. f. 27v-43r: Dat ander boeck van beweechnisse des herten tot berou der sonden. f. 43r-87r: Van wederrechtige eens menschen (=Theodorus) die ghevallen was dat derde boeck. f. 87r-112r: Hoe dat nyemant ghequetst en wort, dan van hemselven. Een schoon onderwijs. This is a translation of Chrysotomus's Libellus quod nemo laeditur nisi a seipso, which was edited in Latin several times in Antwerp in the third quarter of the sixteenth century f. 112r-128v: The seron Van vyantschap, toomicheyt, ende van niet te sweren. f. 128v: Colophon: "Gheprent Thantwerpen op die lombaerden veste teghen die gulden hant over, bi mi Symon Cock Anno M.D. ende Xlvi. Den xviii. in Augusto". f. 129r-131v: Privilege by Charles V. Binding: Contemporary calf with panel (104x66mm) stamped on both covers: two heads in profile in medallios placed vertically with a border of garlands and S-shaped ornaments and intertwined leaves, in the upper one a bearded man looking right, in the lower a woman with a lace collar looking to the left. During the second quarter of the 16th century we see medallion panels appearing on bindings. These heads in medallion, profiles of emperors, heroes or warriors, helmeted or wreathed with laurel, show their derivation from antique coins or medals. See: Quatre siècles de reliure en Belgique, I, 15 and Luc Indestege, "Heads-in-medallion panels as binding decoration in the Netherlands during the 16th century", in: Studia in hon. H. de la Fontaine Verwey (Amsterdam 1966), p. 276-96: our panel is closest to Type XV. Provenance: The book has also an interesting 16th-century provenance. At the end (f. 131v) as well as on the fly-leaf pasted to the back cover is written in a 16th-century hand: "desen boeck hoert toe suster cornelya van gent", resp. "dit boexken heort toe sr. cornelya van ghent", without doubt one of the sisters of a monastery of the Regular canons in Flanders as Anthonis van Gemert in his introduction states explicitly that he translated these text especially for his brothers and sisters of the Augustinian order. Good copy with the additional quire R in a very interesting and attractive binding.- (Panels somewhat worn).
Belg. Typ. 1627; Machiels J 93 (without the last quire).
