CHRYSOSTOMUS, Joannes.Comparatio regii potentatus & diuitiarum, ac praestantiae, ad monachum in uerissima Christi philosophia acquiescentem. ![]() ![]() ![]() Paris, apud Collegium Sorbonae (colophon: Gerardus Morrhius), 1530. 8vo. 19th century half calf. Printer's device (Renouard 818) on last page. (20) lvs. Original edition of Polydorus Vergilius's Latin translation of this treatise of Ioannes Chrysostomus (345-407), a popular 'Fürstenspiegel' on the superb monk and the bad king, with the Greek text added. Polydorus Vergilius dedicated his work (London, 1528) to Erasmus; in later years Polydorus accused Erasmus of plagiarizing his Proverbiorum libellus in the Adagia. The present work is printed by Gerardus Morrhius (Gerrit Morre), member of a well known family in the Overijssel-town Kampen, who after his studies, ca. 1530, established a scholarly publishing house of high standards settled in Paris. In 1537 he returned home. Good copy, with ex libris of the Broxbourne Library.- (2 owner's inscriptions on title: Collegii Cadomensis Soc Jesu (Caen), and M.D. prez Savigny).
