Extremely rare genealogical book on the nobility of Antwerp

Parchment boards, red painted paper leaves pasted on both covers, spine lettered in ink. Engraved frontispiece of a river-god and the virgin of the city of Antwerp with a view of Antwerp in the background, father time flying in the air with four angels and the coat of arms of the seven Antwerp families in his wake, seven engraved half-page coat of arms of the same families, some woodcut tail-pieces and a printer's device on the title. (10), 55 pp. Extremely rare original and only edition of this little book on the seven leading families of Antwerp by Johannnes Baptista Christyn (Antwerp 1630 - Brussels 1690), together with the engravings of their coats of arms. was a famous jurist, lawyer and historian. A very successful career as a high official in the administration of the Spanish King in the Southern Netherlands didn't form a hindrance to his historical and genealogical studies. In 1670 he was appointed as a Councillor of the Secret Council (Geheime Raad) in Malines, followed by a appointment as a member of the High Council of the Netherlands (Hoge Raad) at Madrid and Minister to the Spanish King Charles II. In this last capacity he signed the well-known peace treaty of Nimwegen on 17 September 1673. In 1687 the pinnacle of his career came with the honourable appointment as Cancellor of Brabant.wrote a number of juridical ('Placcaeten van Brabant', 1664), historical ('Histoire général des Pays-Bas', and 'Les delices des Pays-Bas') and genealogical works of which the 'Jurisprudentia heroica', 1603/1668, is the most famous. present book is a copy of his extremely rare work on the nobility of Antwerp, which was published in Leiden in 1672; in the same year in which the same printer also published a similar work on the nobility of Louvain, also written by Christyn. Good copy of this extremely rare edition. The copy is uncut: leaves of the second half of the quires are shorter than those of the first half.- (Rebacked).
