VIII, 6724 pp. The very much enlarged (more than twice the original size), adapted and by far the best second edition of this famous and most popular 'domestic' encyclopedia of the 18th century, originally published in French by Noël Chomel (1632-1712), a French agronomist, entrusted with the domestic management of the possessions of the abbey at Vincennes, where he acquired all the knowledge necessary for a rural exploitation, now edited by Chalmot. The first edition appeared in Lyon in 1709 under the title Dictionnaire oeconomique, contenant divers moyens d'augmenter son bien et de conserver sa sante´. Further editions: 1732, 1740, 1741, 1743 and 1767. A first Dutch translation was published in 1743. Our set contains in the first place the 7 vols. of the second edition of this encyclopedia, printed between 1768 and 1777 by Hendrik Amelius Chalmot in Leeuwarden, who was the son of the editor Jacques Alexandre Chalmot (1734-1801), who published his books in Leeuwarden till 1778 under the name of his son. These 7 vols. are the second issue of this edition with new title-pages, engraved frontispiece, dedication and introduction, all dated 1778. The work is completed by the extensive set of the 9 vols. of the continuation of Chomel's encyclopedia, also composed by Chalmot. In his important introduction Chalmot lists the sources he has used to complement Chomel's text: for instance the works of Linnaeus, Houttuyn, Merian, Leeuwenhoek, Swammerdam, Bufon, Lobel, Dodonaeus, Knoop etc. Also he makes mention of the cooperation of Prof. Petrus Camper, who has attributed many articles. The work gives information on literally every subject the keepers and owners of a country estate or household wanted to know, everything arranged in alphabetical order, including gardening, botany, gastronomy, viticulture, hunting, medicine, together with the more predictable topics of livestock breeding, bee-keeping, farming and farm managment. A hundred and fifty full-page, folding engraved plates illustrate among many other things the process of distilling, the art of measuring and domestic chemistry, garden designs, heated green-houses, the process of trimming and pruning trees, etc. Special attention is given to hunting and catching birds, fishes and other animals.
