Venice, Caroboli & Pompeati Comp., 1768. 8vo. Contemporary boards covered with paper, spine lettered in ink. With engraved portait of Cicero on the title and many very interesting engraved head- and tailpieces. 296 pp.

First and only edition of this extensive Italian poem on the history and techniques of painting by Count Adamo Chiusole (1728-1787). A second issue with the date 1769 is mentioned by Morazzoni.
Count Ciusole was a rather well-known painter himself and he wrote several works on painting and other art historical subjects, for example one of the earliest museum guides ever published, his Itinerario delle pitture d'Italia (Turra 1782) for the Italian Galleries of his time.
After the dedicatory poems to members of the Venetian noble family Correr: Pietro, Maria and Beriola, and the Proemio, follow the eight books of the Art of painting: Il desegno (on Design), Il colorito (on Colouring), la prospettiva (on Perspective, Lib. IV, p. 78-97), l'inventzione (on Invention), e le diverse maniere dei pittori (on the different ways or manners of painting). No less than 87 painters are enummerated and discussed, making the poem a kind of 'Who is who' of the art of painting, including many Italian (a.o. Mantegna, Del Sarto, Cimabue, Giotto, Da Vinci, , Veronese, Rafael, Titian, Tintorretto and Vasari), but also foreign artists such as Dürer, Rubens and Callot, listed in a separate 'Tavola'.
The book is concluded by poems on other art historical subjects, such as a poem to King Ferdinand IV of Naples and Sicily on the newly opened Gallery of Antique painting, where the recently discovered frescoes from Herculaneum were exhibited (p. 209-20), Canzone's (p. 221-49), Sonnets (p. 250-6, 276-80, 284-94), a stage play 'Sopra la pittura' in which the vices curse Painting which is saved by a Deus ex machina.(p. 257-71), Catata (p. 272-5, 281-3).

Very good uncut copy, partially unopened.
Morazzoni, p. 233; Cicognara 978; Schlosser-Magnino, p. 6832.
