Very rare Peking imprint of sentences in Latin, from the works of the Church Fathers on various subjects: on God, hell, friendship, obedience, etc. It was printed in Beijing by the missionary press of the French church in Peking. It was published in a series of three as is stated on the back cover. The Lazarists (members of the Congregation of Mission) had four churches at Peking. The Northern or French church (Pe-t'ang), the Southern or Portuguese church (Nun-t'ang), the Western church (Si-t'ang), and the Eastern church (Tung-t'ang), which was the old house of Johann Adam Schall von Bell. In 1783 Lazaristes were appointed to take the place of the Jesuits in the Levantine and Chinese missions; they still have some footing in China.
