Utrecht, C. van der Post Jr., 1874. 8vo. Original lithographed wrappers. With 3 full-page lithographed plates. VIII, 125, [3 blank] pp.

Interesting travel account of van der Chijs's journey to the Eastern Indies and Java in 1869 and his return home through the British Indies, Egypt and Palestine in 1870. Van der Chijs a.o. visited Ceylon, Singapore, Batavia, Semarang, Delhi, Jerusalem and Cairo before he went home again. As stated in the preface he already published his account in 1872 in the Leeskabinet (Reading-cabinet), but this is the first seperate edition of his journey. The plates depict the Palace at Buitenzorg, the folkloric costume of Javanese women and shops in Batavia (2 illustrations on 1 plate) and the residential house in Djokjokarta.
Jacobus Anne van der Chijs (1831-1905) was an education inspector in the Dutch colonies and a famous numismatic. Van der Chijs published many works on the history of the Dutch East Indies of which the Dagh-register, gehouden in 't Casteel Batavia, van 't passeerende daer ter plaetse als over het geheel Nederlands-India, and Nederlands- Indisch Plakaatboek are most important.
Spine slightly damaged. A good uncut copy of this interesting travel account.
