Rare first edition of the French translation from the English original which was first printed in London by John Watts in 1726 with the title The voyages and adventures of Captain Robert Boyle in several parts of the world. Intermix'd with the story of Mrs. Villars, an English lady with whom he made his surprizing escape from Barbary; the history of an Italian captive; and the life of Don Pedro Aquilio, &c. ... To which is added, the voyage, shipwreck, and miraculous preservation, of Richard Castelman; second ed. 1727, 1728, etc.
These very popular stories were probably fictitious narrative, containing utopian motives and a 'Robinsonade'. The work also includes accounts of various American places. The story of Richard Castleman, however, bears marks of authenticity (Rich, Bibl. Aner. nova, and Echeveerria & Wilkie). The visit to Philadelphia took place in 1710. Boyle's voyages have been often reprinted but Castleman's relation is only to be found in the early editions.
A German translation was printed in 1735 (and 1740, 1744, etc.); An Italian in 1737; a Dutch translation appeared in 1739, a second edition in 1761 with the title De nieuwe Engelsche Robinson ....
Next to the English bookseller and dramatist Wiliam Rufus Chetwood (d. 1766), these romantic adventures on the high seas, which include a brief appearance by Captain William Dampier, has been attributed to various authors, including Daniel Defoe and Benjamin Victor. It borrows extensively from another novel, The Voyages, Dangerous Adventures and Imminent Escapes of Captain Richard Falconer (1720), also ascribed to Chetwood, which in turn had principal sources in other novels and seafaring accounts, including works by Defoe and Esquemeling's The Buccaneers of America (1684-85).

Good copy with 8 plates instead of the 7 plates that Sabin mentions.- (Some browning and marginal water stain in first lvs.).
