Nieustadt, chirurgijn. Amsterdam, Theunis Jacobsz. Lootsman, 1646. 4to. Contemporary vellum with title in ink on spine. Title in red and black with woodcut medicinal illustration of a man pierced by knives and arrows, dedicatory poem ('Klinck-dicht') to the reader on page (8) in red and black, woodcut end-pieces and initials. (8), 430, (10) pp. Corrected Dutch edition of the medical standard manual on surgery until far into the seventeenth century by Guy de Chauliac (1290-1368), the most influential surgeon of the 14th century. This edition, corrected by the surgeon Pieter Rutgersz. van Nieustadt is a revision of the Flemish translation by José van Sterthem which was first published in Ghent in ca. 1553. The first corrected edition by Nieustadt appeared in Dordrecht in 1617. The book, divided in seven parts, originally written in 1363, includes De Chauliac's views on fractures, and gives a.o. an excellent summary of the dentistry of that period. Even after undergoing several editions and translations from Latin into Provencal, French, English, Italian, Dutch, and Hebrew, the seven parts of Chirurgia spanned three centuries as the guiding force in surgical medicine. Key information is found with topics ranging from liberal arts, diet, surgical instruments, and the process of performing an operation. Chauliac also includes a brief history of medicine and surgery as it evolved through earlier physicians and surgeons, in addition to personal information. It is the greatest surgical text of the time. Guy de Chauliac was the most eminent surgeon of his time; his authority remained for 200 years. He distinguished the various kinds of hernia from varicocele, hydrocele, and sarcocele, and described an operation for the radical cure of hernia. Born into a peasant-class family in 1290, he was guided in his studies by the lords of Mercoeur. Chauliac studied medicine first at Toulouse, then at Montpellier, and concluded his education at Bologna. He left Bologna for Paris, then to Lyons where Chauliac was appointed canon (clergyman) of St. Just. Later appointments included canon of Rheims and of Mende. With Avignon being home of the popes at this time, Chauliac became private physician to several bishops and popes, including Clement VI (1342-1352), Innocent VI (1352-1362) and Urban V (1362-1370). Chauliac also became acquainted with the Italian lyric poet and scholar Francesco Petrarcha while serving at Avignon. He survived an infection of the Black Plague. After the pandemic, he wrote this medical manual. He died in Avignon, on July 25, 1368. Good copy from the library of the famous physician and artist H. Wiegersma, Deurne.- (Some lvs. with some stains/browning; old marginal wormhole).
