Auction catalogue of the important collection from the French mathematician Michel Chasles (1793-1880) of rare scientific books. The catalogue, including the supplement, describes 4194 lots. Chasles was a mathematician who worked on algebraic and projective geometry. He  wrote Aperçu historique sur l'origine et le développement des méthodes en géométrie (1873), a work on the history of mathematics, which is an important reference work until today. He was an avid collector of authographs and manuscripts by for example scientists. From 1861-1869 he was a victim of one of the most clever and prolific literary forgers, Denis Vrain-Lucas.
Chasles bought thousands of manuscripts amongst which the correspondence between Isaac Newton, Blaise Pascal and Robert Boyle. In 1869 Vrain-Lucas was brought to trial and convicted, leaving Chasles, who had defended the authenticity of the documents before, with a rather damaged reputation.

Good set.
