Vellum wrappers consisting of a part of a vellum leaf from a 14th or early 15th century manuscript with small alternately red and blue painted initials with penwork. With some interesting woodcut initials. (76) lvs. (A-I 8, K 4) Perhaps the first, but probably the second original Latin edition of this important collection of letters, refutations, treaties, etc. written and issued in connection with the problems and conflicts existing between Emperor Charles V, and François I, the King of France and his allies: Pope Clemens VII and the Italian cities, during the years 1526-1527 preceding the 'Sack of Rome' in 1527. On 26 October 1524 François I had conquered Milan. During the battle of Pavia on 24 February 1525, however, François was taken prisoner. Almost a year later he was released as one of the results of the treaty of Madrid agreed on 16 January 1526. Not much later a coalition was formed against Emperor Charles V, resulting - on 26 May 1526 - in the 'Ligue of Cognac' between François I, the pope, Duke Sforza, Florence and Venice. In the same year (on 19 August) an edition was printed by Joannes Graphaeus, also at Antwerp, probably being the first (NK 1263). In the same year followed an incomplete edition by Martinus de Keyser at Antwerp (NK 1265) and a quarto edition by Joh. Scheffer at Mainz. Translations in Dutch (two editions by Graphaeus: NK 1266-67) and French (NK 1269) followed also in 1527.Contents: (1) f. 2r-6v: Letter of Emperor Charles V to the Principes Germaniae, dated 30.11.1526; (2) f. 6v-12r: Apologia Madriciae conventionis, inter Carolum Imp., & regem Gallum, dissuasoria; (3) f. 12v-48r: Apologiae Madriciae conventionis, dissuasoriae pro Francisco Francorum rege emissae, refutatio; (4) f. 48v-60r: on the provisions of the treaty of Pope Clemens VII with the French king, Venice, Duke Francesco Sforza Venice and Florence, against Charles V, known as the 'League of Cognac' concluded on 26 May 1526: Caputula foederis ... inter Clementem septimum, Regem Gallum, Venetos, Dudem Franciscum Sforciam, ac Florentinos adversus caesarem percussi; (5) f. 60r- 62v: Letter of the French king François I to the 'Elects' of the Roman Empire, being gathered in Speyer, dated 6.10.1526; (6) f.62v-67v: Answer of Charles V to (4), Pro invictis. Romanorum Imperatore Carolo Quinto ... ad ea, quae ... ad generalem pacem componendam nuper proposita fuerunt, responsio; (7) f. 68r-71v: Letter of Charles V to the Cardinals in Rome, dated Granada, 6.10.1526; (8) f. 72r-73r: account of what happend at the moment that the letter of Charles V was read by the Pope and the Cardinals, Instrumentum publicum de his quae Romae acta sunt, dum Pontifici & collegio Cardinalium Caesaris litterae exhibitae fuerunt; (9) f. 73v-74r: second letter of the Pope to Charles V, dated Rome 25.6.1526; and (10) f.74v-75v: the answer of Charles V to this second letter by the Pope, dated Granada, 18.9.1526.This copy is complete with the last leaf, containing on the recto the words 'Cum Privilegio Caesareo pro Io. Grapheo' in cursive type: being a variant of which there is only one copy recorded in the Royal Library at The Hague. Good copy with the engraved bookplate of the Cathedral Lybrary of St. Peter's at Exon., Anno 1749 pasted to the verso of the front cover. - (Title somewhat soiled; spine a little bit damaged).
