Antwerp, (Jacob van Liesvelt) for Marc Martin (Marck Martens), at Brussels, (1540). 4to. Modern half vellum, boards covered with a leaf from an incunable (Bible edition, annotated by a.o. Nicolaus de Lyra), red painted edges. With elaborate large woodcut with coat-of-arms with the two-headed eagle held yup by two angels on the title, historiated and large ornamental woodcut intitials. (10) lvs. Collation: A-B4, C2. 30-31 lines.

Very rare first edition (second issue?) of the decrees, edicts, etc. issued by Charles V at Brussels on 4 October 1540, partly new, partly confirming a number of earlier decrees on trade customs, contracts and monopolies, money and currency, merchants from abroad, proceeding, the relation between canonical and civil law, notaries, marriages, as well on the necessity "pour extirper les erreurs et heresies", giving an interesting view on daily life, especially in Flanders in the years around 1540.
The 8 lvs. mentioned by NK to be perhaps part of this edition (f. a4, b2; f. 11-16 = NK 1654, described there as incomplete: one copy in the Royal Library at The Hague) are not present, but were probable sold separately. The Dutch edition was also published in 1540 by the same publishers.

Added are 2 leaves (3 pages) with handwritten decrees on the same subjects, issued by the regent Mary of Hungary, issued at Brussels on 14 February 1549.

Very good copy with some contemporary annotations in light brown ink.
NK 3646 (only one copy listed: in a private collection, now the FORUM copy); Machiels K(arel V) 94; STC Dutch 140 (= STC French 478); not in Adams or NUC.
