Sentence ordained by emperor Charles V, concerning the staple rights of the city Dordrecht
[CHARLES V, Emperor].Die sententie vanden keyser, roerende tstapelrecht der stede van Dordrecht, met die verclaringhe daer op ghevolcht. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Delft, Cornelis Henricxz. Lettersnijder, also for Claes Janssoon in The Hague, 1541. 4to. Early twentieth-century half calf, gilt spine with red title-label, lettered in gold, marbled boards and endpapers. Woodcut coat-of-arms of emperor Charles V on title. (24) pp. (Collation: [A]-C4). Very rare first issue of the first edition of this sentence ordained by emperor Charles V, concerning the staple rights of the city Dordrecht in the Low Countries. The sentence was first issued on 18 October 1540 and amplified on 4 June 1541, and it was printed in Delft by Cornelis Henricz. Lettersnijder (active in Delft 1516-1541), also for Claes Janssoon in The Hague (active 1531-1544). The sentence was published two times in 1541, our copy belonging the first issue. The second issue (Typ. Bat. 5790) only has a small difference in the colophon in relation to the first: the colophon of our first issue reads '...woonende op die Plaetse, tot Claes ians.z. Boekvercoopere', the second issue has '...tot Claes ians.z. woonende op die Plaetse, Boekvercoopere.' The second edition was printed in Leiden by Claes Adriaenszoon Mast for Frans Bon in Dordrecht (Typ. Bat. 5791). Several editions followed, a.o. in 1612, 1631 and 1667. The STCN locates in total four copies of the two issues printed in Delft (Amsterdam, Univ. Libr.; The Hague, Royal Libr.; Haarlem, Mun. Libr., and Leiden, Univ. Libr.; further copies could be located in Dordrecht, Mun. Archives and Groningen, Univ. Libr.). As far as we can see only the copy in Leiden is the first issue of the first edition. Fine copy.- (Very sl. waterstaining at lower margins of pp. 9-24).
Typ.Bat. 5789; Machiels K-99; Kossmann p. 204; Tiele, Pamfletten, 11; Bodel Nijenhuis 1260 (Ed. 1673); not in Knuttel, Cat. Goldsmith, Kress, and De Buck.
