Rotterdam, H. Nijgh, 1863. 2 parts in 1 vol. Modern half cloth, with the original gilt red morocco spine mounted. With 24 full-page wood-engraved plates, all richly coloured by hand, by E. Sotain, Sargent, Jardin, Pisan, A. Laveille, O. van Jahyer, Piaun, etc. VIII, 386 pp.

First edition of a new and free Dutch translation of both Defoe's "The Life and Strange Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe", and "The Farther Adventures". Nicolaas Antonie van Charante, a minister of the Church at Zaandam (1846-1873), did not translate directly after the English original, but based his Dutch translation on the German translation by L. von Alvensleben, first published at Leipzig in 1850. As Van Charante explains in his introduction, he only changed those passages which to him seemed indecent or contrary to his religious belief, and added when possible some moral or pious advice. A second edition was published in 1879.

Good, brilliantly hand-coloured copy.
Ullrich III, 68; Staverman B 11; Scheepers II, 502; cf. Ullrich II, 73 (German translation by Von Alvensleben); NUC lists 2 copies.
