Troyes, chez la veuve Garnier, (c. 1765). With woodcut vignette on title, and woodcut headpiece in text. 46, (2 blank) pp. Fine collection of eight French chapbook editions, all "Bibliothèque bleue" printed in Troyes, and all but one published by members of the printers-family Garnier. Although these popular works, mostly dating from the Middle Ages, were many times republished - up till the present time - only a few copies survive, so that each work in this collection is rare. The present copy belonged to the nineteenth-century architect Viollet Leduc, the restorator of the Notre Dame Church at Paris, who had the works bound in the present binding. Ad 1: Adventurous story about a king in Constantinople who, after the death of his wife, wants to marry his own daughter, Hélène. She runs away and marries the king of England, after which she goes through many adventures. The permission to print this work, as well as Robert Le Diable, Jean de Paris and Ulespiègle was given in 1738 to Pierre Garnier and is printed on verso last leaf. Ad 2: One of the best chapbooks from German origin, here in French edition. Fortunatus and his children own an inexhaustible purse which makes all their dreams come true, but leads them to their desctruction. The first edition was published in Augsburg, 1509. Although the publisher of this edition is Jean Garnier, who started his business in about 1754, he still uses the permission granted to Pierre Garnier in 1728, and included in the preliminaries . The 'approbation' at the end is dated 1705. Ad 3: The oldest original French comic and facetious romance. The first edition appeared c. 1530-1540. The story is not based on history, but on pure folklore, and is full of comical events and French 'esprit'. The father of 'Jean de Paris' had been called upon to help the Spanish king against his rebellious barons and was promised the king's daughter in marriage, although she was then only three years old. As the father died before the promise was redeemed, Jean de Paris stepped in his father's place, which led to many adventures and mystifications, even involving the King of England. The permission printed on the verso of the last leaf is the same as in the first work. Ad 4: Nisard ascribes the present work to Mme de Gomez, (Madeleine-Angélique Poisson), daughter of the comedy player Paul Poisson, and married to Don Gabriel de Gomez, a Spaniard. She wrote many galant works but also tragedies, and died in 1770 only. Jean de Calais is one of the 'Cent Nouvelles nouvelles', published in 10 vols. Permission and approbation are printed on the recto of the last leaf, both dated 1758, and without mentioning the title and the plublisher. Ad 5: Famous French chivalry novel, dating from the thirteenth century, but first published at Lyons, 1496. The permission printed on recto of last leaf is the same as in the first work. Ad 6: Another famous French novel, a continuation of the adventures of Robert Le Diable, also dating from the thirteenth century, and first published at Lyons, 1497. Here the hero is his son, Richard sans Peur. The permission granted to Pierre Garnier in 1728 for this work and for Gargantuas, etc. is printed on the recto of the last leaf. Ad 7: The popular editions of Gargantua all go back to a printed edition of 1528, previous to Rabelais' edition of 1535, and the basis of his famous Gargantua. Permission and approbation for this work, dated 1714 and without mentioning the publisher, are printed on verso last leaf. Ad 8: Famous picaresque novel, originating from Germany, but with important Flemish, French and English traditions. One of the first French editions dates from the sixteenth century. Good copy of these works, with ex-libris of Viollet Leduc. (Occ. sl. stained; tear in one leaf).
Ad 8: Koopmans-Verhuyck 52. None of these editions in Oberlé, La Bibliothèque Bleue: cf. 86; 275; 109; 103; 92; 105; 264; 269-271; cf. Nisard II, p. 459; 435; 450; 485; 495; I, 535; 544.
